The fuel pump is attached to the fuel sending unit, which is located in the fuel tank. Which means that the fuel tank has to be dropped/removed in order to replace the pump assembly. That's providing it is TBI and not carb'd.

Yup, you're gonna get dirty! If you can, try to get as much fuel out of the tank as you can!

Couple things to add. Be carefull removing/replacing the fuel pump and sending unit. I've read that if it get's banged too much it won't be accurate anymore. Meaning that the gag gauge will read funky. Also while it's out I would clean it out a little bit. Throw some kerosene in there with a couple nuts and shake it around. Also watch out for any pinholes in the tank. When I took the tank out of my 85 blazer I found a few holes around the tank straps.
