As Esty said, be absolutely sure your in neutral before you try to switch to 4wd.
That said, mine takes a good tug to get back into 4H and 4L. If it feels wrong or physically won't go in that's another thing.
Not sure if its normal, always been like this for me but give it a good yank and it should go right in if it's like mine.

Since we are on this being in neutral thing, does the push button electronic 4wd on first gens (93) need to be in neutral as well, I have never put mine in N to put the 4wd on.

it could be park or neutral for electric
I put mine in neutral to be safe

A mode shift, (2HI to 4HI or 4HI to 2HI) can be done at any speed, (shift on the fly). A range shift, (4HI to 4LO or 4LO to 4HI) the vehicle must not be moving. This holds true with both the manual & electric shift transfer cases.

What Captain Hook said holds true
You can look in your owners manual (real men dont need instructions) and under your 4WD section it will tell you what needs to be done
The only reason I was detailed in my first post is becaise I was looking at it the other day because I was haveing problems with my 4WD front axle (all fixed now) but my old 91 blazer was the same and it was a stick not push button as a matted of fact as I rember any 4X4 that has a low range needs to be shifted in to low 4WD in neutral
most others except for a few can shift on the fly in and out or 4W Hi to 2W Hi and back again

u do have to push the button on top of the stick, be in neutral, and pull all the way back on the stick, can be a lil stiff.....try greasing the linkage on the trans case too so it becomes easier to shift. lube works wonders on what ever u put it on, just a lil fun fact.
