How have you determined that you have a bad oil pump? Are you just going by the reading your dash gauge is giving you? Not to come across as a dick responding to your 1st post but you are like the 3rd or 4th person I've seen just this month on this board who has complained about their oil pump being bad.

How many miles on the engine? Have you had an oil pressure master gauge hooked up to the engine and noted oil psi at different engine rpms. As I've learned being a member of this forum, anywhere from 10-25 psi @idle is an acceptable range with for motors.
Let us know...

Agreed. You'd be surprised by the guys who think they have a bad pump and it turns out it was their sender with a leak which transmits a lower O/P reading. Check this first. It's a heck of a lot cheaper.

well.....since you're convinced the pump is bad...........but i'm guessing you've verified that with a good mechanical gauge.

just be careful you don't drop the driveshaft for the distributor. usually it's held in with a plastic retainer clip (to the top of the pump shaft), but sometimes it becomes britle with age.

just be thankful that your buddy doesn't have a '96+ 4.3 to do this on. you'd be pulling the engine otherwise.

oh yeah.......zero pressure usually means means wiped mains.

There is a check valve (ball) that can stick oprn in the adapter. I'd try about anything before I started pulling the motor apart. Just a suggestion.
