My son came home tonight and couldn't turn the engine off on his 94 S10 blazer. The key would not turn to the off position. He thought the car might not recognize that the shift lever was in park but putting it in gear and then to park again several times didn't help. Eventually I removed the air intake and blocked it off to kill the engine and then disconnected the battery.

Anyone ever have this happen and what is the fix.

Sounds like something has gone wrong with the key cylinder. You should be able to turn the engine off even with it in gear. You just would not be able to remove the key...
