Fuel pump questions
Sorry if this has been answered before, I haven't found it yet and my only online access is through my phone. After weeks of searching, my brain feels like it gonna explode!
I've read that the fuel pumps on my '93 S-10 Blazer tend to burn up when run under 1/4 tank. Will this happen the first time it goes below 1/4 or is it something that has to happen a number of times? Also, is there a fix for this problem, like swapping gas tanks or different pumps?
From my reading on here, these Blazers seem to have their own quirks and personalities...like me! Thanks in advance!

Well, keeping the pump submerged in gas helps to keep it cool. So, when your tank gets to 1/4 full the pump is open to the air in the tank and isn't getting the full benefit of cooling from the gas. Like anything that is electrical, it generates heat so having it stay cool helps to prolong the life of the device.
Also, I think 1/4 tank puts the fluid level right at the bottom of the pump, so any change in fluid levels, like cornering, could cause the pump to lose suction and pick up air.
About the only mod you can make to the stock pickup and pump is gut the stock pump so it's free flowing and ad an external pump to the frame. Modifying the pump output line to accept the tank sock (in-tank filter) is much harder to do than just removing the prop and guts from the fuel pump. Any external pump is going to cost bank and to be honest I wouldn't do, unless you got money to burn. I do recommend replacing the stock pump, when the time comes, with ACdelco part(S). Dropping the tank to replace the pump isn't really that hard, it can be done in an afternoon if you have help

Thanks for the info! I've had my Blazer for a couple months now, but have not had it road ready until now. I'm still trying to figure all the little quirks out on it. Not knowing what the previous owners had done to it, its not easy! Thanks again!
