Default Hard Brakes w/ air sound

Hey guys, I know squishy brakes mean air in the brake lines, but my pedal is hard to press down, and while I’m pressing it, it sounds like an air compressor. It take a long time to come to a stop. I read that this could be a vacuum problem?? Anyone got any tips on what to check and how to go about it? Anything beyond replacing brakes and flushing lines I’m not knowledgeable in.

Sounds like your brake booster is bad, check for vacuum to it, when they go bad the brake peddle go's solid and you will hear a whooshing sound while pushing on peddle.

Agree with Odat. The good news is that a new one doesn't cost much and replacing one is pretty straight forward. The bad news is that replacing one is a major PITA.

First check the large ---1/2 inch ? ---vacuum hose going to the brake booster. If that is good, it is probably the booster itself. I hear it is a bear to replace.

That was my problem, I had to pull on the wheel, with both feet on the pedal to get brakes. Took me an afternoon and a few beers and cursing, but got one from a scrap yard for a few bucks and all good, that was about a year or so ago...

It's a PITA on an S10 but if he has a K5 (as the username would imply), it's not that bad of a job.

True, didn't even pay attention to the name. Hopefully he does have a K5, otherwise he will invent a few new curse words like I did when I have to change mine out.
