Default Head gasket

Hello Looking for some info reg. a head gasket change on a 4.3L vortec Vin W engine. I purchased the car knowing that it had a valve problem, what I wasn't sure but I thought I'd take a chance on getting a nice car for the cost of some valve work. I tore it apart and found a broken rocker stud with very little other damage. Had the stud replace and hand lapped the vales and cleaned everything and put it back together using a FeldPro head set. Cracked it up and was happy that it as running great. Then ! I started refilling the water and then noticed a nice flow of water out the tailpipe, and started getting white smoke along with the water flow RATS!! I turn it off and checked the oil which was just starting to turn milky.
I'm suspecting I nissed something when I replaced the head gasket, I did the valve stem gaskets but did not do anything more when putting it back together. I went over the really well when it was out and of course I did not have these problems when it was running with the bad valve. I think I missed something when putting it back together.
Any comments would be appreciated Thnks BC1

Head gasket on backwards would be my guess. It is easy to do.
