Heater lukewarm

in my '85..anything I should check before taking it to an "expert"..?

yeah, check to see you have water in it, since water plays a big role in your hvac system. also check your evaporator. it should be somewhere behind the dash.

Yeah check the temp of the coolant flowing into the heater core, if one is hotter than the other then you may have a clogged core or worst case leaking one.
