The hood liner in my 89' is worn and beat up. is it necessary to even have a hood liner? or can i just tear it out and throw it away. thanks for the help.

You can get rid of it so long as you still have the seal at the back of the hood where it meets the firewall/cowl.

To keep underhood vapors from entering the HVAC system intake which is located on top of the cowl on the passenger side.

I'm wondering what the reason is for the liner in the first place. Is it for heat insulation, sound insulation, to make it look good, or some other reason? I've been thinking of taking mine off too, but it's still in pretty good shape. Should I just leave it on?

Its for sound more than anything. If its in good shape theres no need to remove it IMHO unless you just want it gone.
