It's also for heat insulation to help protect the hood paint. Ever see the hood on a old car without it and think, "Gee, the paint looks like it got hot." ? That's what happened, all right.

I've always heard that but my last v8 s10 didn't have the liner and after being built and ran for almost 15 years now still looks good.
