Mine was doing the same thing to me about two years ago. I sprayed a lot of WD-40 directly on the latch and into the cable, and it has worked fine ever since.

Replacing is fairly easy. I replaced mine with one from a junkyard last year. There are a few clips in the engine compartment and feed it through the firewall and mount under the dash.

To replace just find one at pep boys or auto zone don't remove cable cover and just pull it out the cable that is the replacement one will just slip right in then adjust inside below the dash, no big deal. The other way would be to go to the junk yard and find one cable and cover and replace the whole darn thing. Eighther way its not too hard. Good luck. Just Plain lucky.

I am not sure how the cable from Pep Boys ore Auotzone is made but the OEM handle is bonded to the cable and the engine side has a lug that is crimped on the end from the factory. There is no way to pull a cable through the tube. You need a complete assembly either new or used. When my pull handle broke I found a replacement in the junkyard. It is easy to remove and install.
