Our 93 Jimmy has a major problem. It sounds like it has a cam when you crank it up, it burns gas like crazy, there is a strong gas smell on the dipstick.... Sources have said that that is the FPR. But how do I know that it is only the Fuel Pressure Regulator and not the entire spider unit? Do I need to take off the entire upper intake manifold first just to check?

You can pull off the manifold tuning valve (under the plastic Vortec cover) and have a look down inside, but you cannot really see the other components that are inside the intake. Your best bet would be to remove the upper plenum and pressurize the system. Look for leaks.
