Hey guys I'm new to the blazer scene and new to this site. I just bought an 85 blazer 4x4 with the 2.8, carb. It ran fine the first few days now i have a strange "metal clunking" sound when i put it in gear (auto). I've got people telling me torque converter, people telling me trans filter.
I'm not sure where to start, except checking the fluid and draining the pan. When i am stopping it shakes really bad once below 5mph, and also once i get into second. I can also notice a "whoosh" noise from under the truck when stopped in drive or reverse. Again forgive me I am very new to blazers (I'm a Nissan Z guy). ANY suggestions or infor on were to start would be VERY appreciated. I also dont have a haynes or a chiltons at this time.

With a metal clunking sound the first thing I'd check is the drive shaft. I had an '83 LeSabre and the front drive shaft yoke broke on it on my way home from the store. I ignored the metal clunking sound for a while until the yoke finally broke. After you've ruled out the drive shaft you can start checking out other things.

I've replaced the U-joints in it already. That was my first thought

See if the torque converter to ring gear (flywheel) bolts are loose. If so then check for elongated bolt holes in the ring gear. On some Chevys there are two sets of holes. Had a '82 truck that this happened to and it gets worse pretty quick.

well I've been driving it around alot and the problem seems to be overdrive. as long as I keep it out of it I have no sputter/shake. I was planning on rebuilding it anyways so it's no biggie really. I also adjusted my "TV" cable and it shifts alot smoother and at the right time.
