Question Kickdown Cable/Throttle Valve Cable not hooked up

85 2.8 S10 Blazer

Threw on an Edelbrock Intake & 1403 Carb. Everything works great but the tranny cable was a lil messed up and short so was thinking about just not hooking it back up to the carb.

I have heard that it is just a kickdown cable and I can do without it. I have also heard that it is a throttle valve cable and that without it I will burn up my transmission.

So anyone with real experience that can tell me what it really is and its importance please let me know.

If I have to have it I may need to replace it with a longer one and I have no idea how it needs to be attached to the carb.

i have heard that its bad for the transmission also but i have run a few trucks without them. i had a offroad truck i ran for a few years without it and when i put a small block in my 95 s10 i didnt have one it.

they actually sell a piece that bolts onto the edelbrock carb that you can hook that kick down cable too, i eventually hooked it up to the smallblocked s10 so it would downshift when pushing the gas.

thats really the downside to doing it is you dont have the passing gear. so if you accelerate slowly and say youre in 3rd gear at 20mph and floor it the truck just kinda bogs and goes. never really bothered me much in the big ol offroad truck as it was slow as heck anyways.

but if you have the cable hooked up to your transmission look into getting that bolt on part for the carb wouldnt hurt to be safe

just curious as to how it hurts the transmission? i could see the added strain of having to throttle more while in 3rd gear or something of that nature but just wondering what makes it bad

It messes it up because you are changing line pressures. I had serious issues with my TV cable and it caused me to have to replace my trans. Line pressure was so much, that when I put it in drive, it snatched my rear end so hard it snapped my rear end gears into pieces. So yea, it cost me a rear end too. Basically to ensure proper adjustment, you wanna disconnect it, pull your throttle to WOT, and pull the TV cable out until the connector lines up with where you hook it up at WOT. Listen for the clicks and make sure it stays in that position. The slightest change will change shift points dramatically.
