loose steering wheel
1988 blazer with tilt adjustable steering wheel. it has side to side play and up and down play. there is no push pull loosness. is there an adjustment for this ? the roads in trenton have been iced up the last few weeks and rattled the blazer preety good.

this is a common issue in older GMs. what you have to do is take off the steering wheel (there's a puller for that), take off the turn signal switch, and then get in there and tighten two out of the three bolts that have worked themselves loose over the years. I'd suggest loctite, but I loctite'd mine and they didn't hold. The third one is impossible to get to without removing the tilt mechanism, and I'm not quite sure I want to do that on my truck.
And be careful when you reassemble it, the first time I did mine it honked the horn for a short burst every time I went around corners.
This thread's for an El Camino, but it'll work on your blazer: http://www.elcaminocentral.com/showthread.php?t=27192
Mine's at the point where it's loose but not loose enough that it shuts the truck off when I try to do a turn in reverse, but i've gotten used to it. There was a time there where i'd reverse out of a parking spot and the truck would shut off, then you could pull on the steering wheel to turn it back on.

i'm sorry i asked. don't think i'll be doig this fix myself. i't got to be a conspiracy the way they desinged this vehicle. all that just to tighten . and the gas line is hidden away in the frame rail. any way thanks so much for the info on this, other wise i would have found out the hard way. i'll be leaving this post now.

I just had my local independent mechanic work on mine. They remove the two bolts and loctite them and re-install. Put the column back together. Charged me about an hours worh of labor and my steering wheel is nice and tight.

My solution lately has been to live with the damn thing. It rests on the bottom, it doesn't honk the horn when I turn, and the truck doesn't get shut off when I'm in reverse. Plus, there's enough play in my steering rack that it feels... right. to drive. My roommate's bronco II has waaay too tight of a steering rack. there's about 1/4" of play there, my truck has more like 2.
