so the symptoms previously described are more than likely related to vac leaks?

I disconnected the wire under carpet brown/black. going to set timing based on tdc on compression stroke on #1 cylinder using thumb to blow off clylinder. Question one should my marks on vibration dampner line up with marks on timing cover or should I just go by compression stroke? after getting this answer I will connect plugs in firing order 165432 then use a timing light to check initial timing. Should I already have the wire reconnected that goes to the distributor that is under the carpet? Is there anything else I should do once I get this done? thank you for all your responses everyone.

ok i set the timing to o degrees connected the wire back in the cab and now when i put it in drive he wants to stall did not change the advance or retarding on distributor. did i do something wrong?
