Default Oil drain plug

So went to do an oil change on my 92 4.3 and found out it has an universal drain plug and a closer look confirmed my fears the drain plug has been stripped. How much of a pain in the butt is it to replace an oil pan on one of these? Do you have to drop a lot of stuff or raise the engine? I have repalced some that were just unbolt and slide out and others that you have to take the whole damn eninge out to replace it so i figured that i would jump on here and ask first before jumping in on that project. Thanks for the help

Did you even try to get the plug off? Pair of channel locks normally gets them off.

This is why people should not over tighten there oil drain plugs.

I am confused if the actual plug is stripped, or the thread that the plug screws into on the oil pan. If its just the plug, why the heck would you need to remove the oil pan to get it off.

Maybe an oversized drain plug? I believe some of these thread normally at first then self-tap to a larger size...

Similar issue with mine but looks like it still has the stock drain plug but the pan is stripped. I may try an oversized plug once I drain it again.

try an over sized plug, but being 4wd, It is NOT easy at all, to drop the oil pan. Pretty much gotta remove the engine.

The engine has to be lifted a few inches. Unless you need to drop the front end case.

had this problem once on a 4x2. all you gotta do is drill it out a little bit and then re-tap it. i dont know how much room you have for tools and things under a 92 but if you can, it would save you a lot of head ache. once you get it re-tapped and everything, and have a new drain plug, you can put 2 quarts of oil in it to get all the shavings and stuff out. then just treat it like an oil change and continue on. just make sure that you dont over tighten it. jiffy lube over tightened mine for me when i was in texas for work. found out when i got home in cali.
