Default Problem with lights

I have a weird problem with my turn signals and tail lights. When lights are off, the turn signals work fine. When the left turn signal is on and I hit the brakes, the signal stops flashing and the arrow on the dash stays lit green. The right signal stays blinking when I hit the brakes. If the parking or headlights are on, the turn signals don't work at all and neither do the tail lights.

I assume there is a short somewhere, but where should I start looking? Could it be just a bad turn signal relay or bad stalk on the steering column?

would help to know what your driving...year, model, z,w etc....at the end of the sterring column there is a J-connector...disconnect and inspect for arching, loose male ends, any kind of corrorsion at all and replace if found....leave disconnected and turn your headlights, parking lights on and hit the brake and see what happens....it may give you your first clue....

I would start with the light bulbs and work my way in. Sometimes bad bulbs will cause wierd problems, you may get lucky. Start with the left, rear, tailight and check/replace the bulb and check the socket and wiring. Don`t forget the left front marker light since this is part of the same circut. If you have a trailer hitch wiring harness and it plugs in, unplug it and plug your stock harness back together and check your lights, if your problem goes away, then you know it`s in your trailer harness. I think your switch is fine since it works with the lights off.
