Proportioning Valve Issue Help Please

So if I replace the valve, do I have to buy a new line as well or will the one that is there work already? Also how many parts do I have to remove to get to it? on a scale of 1-10 how hard is it?

Also why I am at it I have to replace my driver side valve cover will that be more accessible from parts I have to remove to change the prop valve?

Well this should answer your how hard is it level question





remember use line wrenches on the lines so you dont strip em
also the brakes are gonna have to be bled after this repair

So not too difficult but still probably beyond my skill level, I may have to break down in the end and do it myself but that will only be as a last resort. About how long should something like this take? also how much are line wrenches? and how do you bleed the brakes?

in theory its easy, unbolt the 4 lines and bolts holding it on and installation is reverse of removal. but theres so much that can go wrong. i replaced a prop valve on my 83 s10 years ago. i even sprayed down the lines every day for 2 weeks. 3 out of the 4 broke so i had to run new lines. if the thread is screwed up on that line yeah you need to replace it or reflare it. but to reflare it you have to remove the line out of the truck which is probably impossible due to it being rotted or all one piece probably.

i had another s10 later on with a leaky prop valve. it was actually leaking out the side of it. there should be a part on the prop valve that unscrews from the rest. i forgot what i did but i put some kinda washer in there to keep it from leaking and fixed the problem for a little while anyways but started sloooowly leaking later on down the road.

then you have to bleed all 4 wheels to get the air out of the lines. and sometimes those bleeders dont open due to age. call other shops and see if you can get a better price if your not comfortable doing it. i did mine when i was new to cars but i had a second vehicle to drive while this thing was down

is there some kind of sealant I can use to try and slow the leaking down?

serious dude? I wouldn't even try sealing it . I wouldnt even drive the truck like that .. your putting your self and others lifes in danger

serious dude I have 2 jobs and cant afford not to drive it. I put brake fluid in once every 4 days and it hasn't let me down yet so hopefully it stays that way if not then I s.o.l

all i need to say its a real stupid idea trying to seal it ... plus brake fluid is very flammable .. if any gets on top of your manifolds ... you can say good bye to the truck

and also Im not doing this to be mean or pick on you or any thing ... but do it right the 1st way and the safe way

See i didn't know that could happen so I appreciate you telling me that now I know not to do that and I want to try and fix it right but I have to have money first , after rent and bills I am broke just enough for gas and groceries ... anyways the valve u found earlier said it was for 91-96 and it said it wouldn't fit on mine

oh yes i forgot yours is an 89 ... Ill do more research on finding the cheapest possible
