Hi, I have a 93 Jimmy and I had to take the side mirror off to tuck the new window weatherstripping under it properly. Problem is, the top part of the tension spring is now inside the mirror, so deep that there is no way I could reach it. I tried lubing it up and pushing the spring back through but the spring just buckles and doesn't budge. I can't put the mirror back on until the spring is correct again. Can anyone tell me how to disassemble the mirror to get to the spring? There were 4 phillips screws behind the mirror glass and I was able to get out 3 of them but the 4th is unreachable. Any ideas? I personally would just get a new mirror. They are extremely cheap.

As for fixing that one. I have no idea, i have never had one apart.

 

Unfortunately this doesn't fix my problem because they are power mirrors and to unhook the mirror from the wires, I'd need access into the mirror housing. The only way would be to break the mirror or cut the wires and I'd rather not do either. Maybe someone with the Haynes or Chilton would be able to help me out? Not sure.

 

If I recall correctly when I had my 93 and 94 with power mirrors there is a harness connection inside the door. You remove the 2 or 3 torx screws that hold the whole mirror assembly onto the door

Okay I guess I'll end up doing that. Still cant figure out how to take the mirror apart without breaking it. I'm sure I've already screwed up the gearing in the mirror trying to get it apart anyways. Might as well get a new one. Pretty butthurt about having to spend $50 because I wanted to do the window seal the right way. I'll have to be much more careful with the other side. I had no idea that ridiculous spring was inside there and was all one piece. like wtf

 

Sorry came up empty on that type of mirror. Has changed between 1993 and 1994.

Seems though that the spring should go all the way from the upper to the lower tensing wire which reaches inside the car.

On the 1994 I broke one glass while attempting to work through that.

 

Well I manhandled the mirror and got the glass out without breaking it. Got the last screw out and got access to the spring. Unfortunately the spring is not long enough to reach both ends of it outside of the mirror to make hooking it back up easy. Needlenose wont work. I have to find a way to hook one end of the spring up to the metal loop it connects to inside the door. Might connect a strong and lengthy zip tie to one end of the spring hook and connect the other to the car, then pull the zip tie to effectively pull the other end of the spring from the mirror housing onto the other metal loop it connects to. hopefully that will work, if I can even get the mirror back together. Hope that made sense.

 

You have way more patience than I do hahaha I would have been purchased a new/used mirror
