Default Speedometer problem

i have an 86 s10 with the 2.8L. the other day i pushed the button to reset the trip meter and the speedometer and odometer stopped working the gas and the other gauges work though. I was wondering if anybody out there has run into this before and what could be wrong with it

Have you getting behind the guage cluster and tapping on the sides of the speedo? You probably just made something seize up-if not then it's broken. That is odd though-first I've ever heard of it.

I take it that the needle is sitting at 0 mph. some times the needle comes loose on the fit ( like the hands of a watch ) and drops to the bottom...if there's no pin at the rest position the needle will be lower than normal.

Seems to be a trend! (sigh)
My 94 is making noise now as if the speedo is about to let loose...but since it's a digital dash, I need to see if I can figure out how to even check if it's loose or not! Good luck with the repair!

If you have a digital dash there isn't any kind of cable like an old speedometer. Your speedometer runs off a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) at the transmission (2 wheel drive) or the transfer case (4 wheel drive) to a VSS buffer located next to your computer. I'd check for some loose screws or maybe even a loose or broken light bulb. The dash really isn't that hard to pull. When you get it out you'll just see a big receptacle that the dash plugs into. I'd look elsewhere if one of the items mentioned above isn't the problem.

Thanks, Gimpy. I've actually had the dash out a couple of times, so I know the receptacle you're talking about. And thanks a bunch about the VSS! I had wondered about that but hadn't looked into it yet. So I guess I'll need to check everything else the next time I need to get into it. I hope that the next time will be when I replace the digital dash. I hate not having all that info at my fingertips! I haven't even had a fuel gauge for the past few years and have had to rely on NASCAR methods.....I reset my trip meter every time I get gas and top it off. As long as my MPG doesn't change (and I always check that too - yes, I'm a bit of a nerd concerning these things) I know that I can get about 250 miles per tank. So I start thinking about gas when I hit the 200 marker....I guess it's a good thing that I still have my speedo and odometer!

Oh! And the odometer comes and goes too for some reason! I'm sure that's also a loose connection because it comes back on if I bang on the dash. You gotta love the high tech methods of fixing things!
