you need to remove the screws around the outside of the interior panel. then you.....................

wait, if i remember correctly, you can't get @ the screws, since they're below the seal area. sorry, it's been awhile since i had to remove that panel.

you need to open your rear window, and use a long, slim screw driver (or anything similar) to flip the tab inside to release the latches. it sounds like it might have gotten bent. did you ever have a tough time opening the TG @ any time recently?

I broke that handle on mine off so all I have is a keyhole. we slip a screwdriver in the keyhole and turn it. You should be able to get the interior panel off from inside and you will see the bars that go from the key area to each side of the tailgate. Grab onto both of those and pull them toward the keyhole to pop the latches. Then have a look in there to figure out whats unhooked or bent or needs lube.

Thanks for the reminder to fix mine when I have some spare time.

Im working on a 49 desoto latley thats got my attention.
