Default Timing problems with '86 s10 blazer..help?

I just reaplaced my spark plugs, wires, rotor, and distributor. Well no im having a really rough idle and its not the wires. I have them all where they are supposed to me. Ive had many sources tell meim right as well. SO not the wires or sparks. We then tried to time it and we noticed that when our timing mark got closer to being correct with the harmonic the worse the idle became. But, when we turned it the other way away from the harmonic it seemed to get better in idle? We're so confused with it. My engine is a 2.8l v6. And help would be greatly appreciated....

When timing, did you unplug the wire under the carpet on the floor passengers side? You must do this or it will not read properly.

^ yep. look for a tiny brown wire under the glove department. it'll have a connector on it. Unplug it,crank the truck, time it,shut it off, then plug it back in. engine light MIGHT come on,if it does just disconnect the battery for a sec.
