"What to fix now?" 87 w 2.8
Chances are its the pump,if the relay was bad it wouldnt do anything at all. Look at the firewall and you'll see 2 relays on the drivers side. switch em and see if it helps. one is for the ac,others for fuel pump. both are the same.
Thanks Chris. I will wait till just about empty and get the pump replaced.
Tune-up complete! Runs ALOT smoother but of course it took a long time as I found out space kind of tight near distributor cap and changing plugs. Also had technical difficulty as I had the firing order wrong. Again thanks to this forum I found a post and diagram and it started right up.
Brakes done, tune-up done, window fixed so original to do list is complete.
Still idling at 20,000 rpms...what should it be idling at?
Next month compressor and matching front tires guess I should include alignment.
Any thing else I missed?
Thanks again.
Tomorrow change brakes on Acura daily driver and almost forgot in two weeks I will order upper and lower ball joints for my truck I took apart last weekend (yep lots of used cars to maintain).

thanks NEO,
Looked up TPS and very well could be. My vehicle has throttle body and looks like it has two of these right on the carb...is that possible?
I will try to get a pic...it is 2.8 engine. Also I did notice the gasket between the carb and air intake is cracked. Runs TONS better since the tune up, quiet even, but still high idle. As it seems to be carb related going to find someone reliable to look into it.
Peace for the feed back helps a lot.

You only have one TPS. I knows 87s pretty well and 60 degree v6s (2.8, 3.1, and 3.4) also. I've owned 2 87s besides the one in my sig, have 3 s-series with 60 degrees, and have owned 2 firebirds with v6s. If ya need any help I have a full set of GM service manuals for a 87 s/t series.
The TBI for 2.8s is the same outside as the 4.3, 5.0, and 5.7. Only difference is the bore (2.8 smaller) and the throttle levers. The TPS is always attached to the shaft opposite of the lever. The IAC is on the same side as the TPS but off at an angle. In the pic its upside down but the IAC is pointing to the upper right. The TPS hooks up to the flat on the shaft on the right. As the shaft rotates it turns the flat and the sensor tells the ecm of the throttle postion.

On a 87 the TPS has to be tuned with a multimeter (search adjustable gm TPS) any time its changed. Hell I repinned my 87 to run a 88+ ecm with a v8 chip for the 350, my 91 is supposed to be self tuning and still tune both..

Finally made it back and thank you all for the tips especially Chris015!
I went down the list and did tune up of course had firing order wrong but this site saved me...again...looked up correct order and was fine.
Had to take car back to mechanic and brake booster they put in was bad so they warrantied the work.
I also just had a new muffler put in as the old one had holes in it and even though it was not loud I was concerned about CO2 fumes as my daughter will start driving the car soon...too soon for me!
Now the new one is not "loud" but sounds like a throaty v6...is that an oxymoron? or what..best I can describe it sounds like a good ol chevy.
What I thought was a "high idle" was normal according to another mechanic and just the tach gauge reading is off.
Still have not tackled AC compressor but no need to right now as it is cool but windows fixed...almost...as I posted before passenger side needs "track" and I wanted to know if you all have experience ordering this?
Also will need to replace fuel pump soon so will order part and let someone tackle that one.
Oh yeah...any idea why I might have HUGE brake pad squeal when coming to a stop? All pads are new and someone suggested wear indicator may have been bent when installed or for some reason the pads are glazed over. Suggestion was to take front ones out and rub on cement?!
Rears are drums and no clue what to do with those.
Truck moves along pretty good now and just have to get used to way a 25 year old v6 rumbles.
Also gas mileage....any idea what you all get...I was guessing 16 mpg city and that is being generous.
Again thanks for all replies and help. I literally want to say a big THANKS to you all for the site and keeping my projects rolling.
OH yeah almost forgot..did anyone have problems with leaky roofs? I was at an auto drive through car wash (brushless) and heard water. I look back dripping into vehicle!
Part was near rear corner but not from glass and other was from dome light!
Guy told me he disconnected due to short not a leak! Any how I looked up when loading my sea kayak on factory rack and noticed rust and holes at the first three screws that hold chrome molding for the luggage racks.
I went cheap since no one will see it and got some spray foam to fill in the void and then filled with JB weld around all screws and under chrome. Have not wanted to test it again but I can imagine what it looks like under the liner!
Haven't had the nerve to take it back to the car wash to see if this was the problem!
Peace and Happy New Year to all.
David
