Default Front differential click

Click coming from the front

only happens in 4x4 or 4auto

its a 2005 with an automatic

doesnt happen in 2wd. The light stays on so I am assuming the 4x4 is working but I’m scared to really test it. Research is leading me to believe it’s the carrier bearing? Any way I can test or confirm before ripping the half shaft out?

words of wisdom appreciated. I’m in a pinch.

There's a tech article that covers the more common occurrence of this where it clicks in 2wd, but not in 4HI/Auto4wd and it likely is the same problem; a sticking or worn engagement collar inside the front axle. It could also be a sticking engagement cable as well. The tech article shows you what's in there and how to diagnose the issue.

Thanks for the response. Do you have the article handy? Since you’ve seen it before, maybe you can point me in the right direction. Might be a sticky? I’ll look around.
