Default TRANS TOAST?

Anybody ran into this?

my 97 4x4 blazer seems to have a trans issue. here what i've found.

At takeoff, i give her gas. the tach goes up to about 2400rpm before any forward movement can be detected.
(by this time traffic has left me behind)
seems to me i don't have 1st gear. (the 1st shift from stopped, comes at about 40mph)

i have driven several 4.3 powered vehicles, none were as slow as this one..

i have never heard of a trans loosing 1st...how about you?

thanks!

A buddy had a auto. 91 Eclipse that was stuck in 3rd gear. And it would do the same thing, rev up to about 3,000 rpm and slowly start to move from a stop. He junked it so we never found out what the exact problem was. Most likely, it's a blown trans. [:@]

Have you checked the trans fluid level, colour and smell (burnt)?

If it's badley discouloured or smells burnt, then the pan should come of and check for material in the pan.

My '99 LT 4wd fried the tranny and torque converter at just over 40,000 miles. Dealer denied any issues and claimed it must have been my driving even though I had been in before because it had been shifting strangely. I never towed or used 4WD except for snow 2 times (maybe 8 hours total).
Private tranny place was VERY familiar with the problem. Said most go out between 50K and 100K on Blazers.
The internet also seems to confirm that info.
I love my blazer, but that is definitly a design flaw that Chevy is just ignoring.
I put $1900 into complete rebuild of tranny with better aftermarket parts and new Torque converter, including labor. It got me a 3 year or 25K warranty and I've never had tranny problems since. The dealer was talking way more than that $2500 and little or no warranty (besides putting the same crappy design parts back in to fail again).

Best of luck. I wish I had better news for you.

Ask around for the best local tranny guy. Then go talk to him about Blazers. See what he has to say. I bet you hear the same story.

Check your fluid levels and condition like ChevyLover stated. You might have a burned up torque converter, planetary gear sets, clutch pack, clogged cat. The list could be long without more information about fluid level and condition.

Most likely will need to be rebuilt soon...when you do make sure that the shop builds it like a fullsize pickup version. They have 9 clutches versus our 6 and have them install the fullsize servo for better pressure application at cruising, for better towing performance. Some people install the servo from the corvette, it has more surface area for better clamping pressures...

fluid level is normal. trans was flushed about a year before i got it. (has about 25k on it now)
seems about normal. doesn't smell burnt. slightly darker than out of the bottle.

Since it was flushed a year ago before your ownership, I would recomend that you have the filter changed?? If you read some more threads about tranny flushing you might find that this is all to common after having the trans flushed. If the filtre was not removed and a new one installed then any contaminants like clutch fibers and any metal filings are trapped in the filter causing it to become clogged. And since the filter is actually the fluid pickup for the trans then any clog here will not let enough fluid flow through the valve body for the tranny to function properly...

** UPDATE **
I thought i would give an update on this problem..
trans is fixed. turns out it was the ignition switch.
apparently, on blazers, they take power for the trans from the ignition switch.
when you check it at the fuse block in park it's fine. move the shifter to drive and the voltage goes down to 3 volts. replaced the electrical switch and now she shifts fine...
