Wild fuel gauge

Wild fuel gauge
Ok, I had to replace my fuel pump. While doing this one of the rusty hard lines broke. So as it was 5 p.m. on a Friday I didn't have a lot of choices but to go to O'Reilly and get what they had, it was a Specter(?) brand. Cheaply made but had no choice. Well now my gas gauge goes all over the place. It will settle while going steady down the road but even a small amount of excelleration will send the needle zinging as much as 3/4 of a tank.
I was told that there is a "buffer" in the dash somewhere that is suppose to compensate for fuel sloshing around and keep the guage steady. Could this be bad? If so where do I look for this thing? Is there a better brand sending unit I could look for?
Oh my gauge did start moving around a little bit(less then 1/8 of a tank) before I replaced the old sending unit.
Thanks for any help!

I relplaced my fuel tank and sending unit right from GM. Same thing. My fuel guage is crazy. It says full for about 300 km's then starts to go nuts. I thought that I may have it installed wrong. I can't figure it out and the dealership said to live with it. Great help they were.
