My son was driving in the snow last night and had to use the emergency brake to help him stop before he went into his friends parents garage. When he came home later on the key will not come all the way out of the ignition. I read some of the topics on this here But I am very confused. I was able to get the key out by pushing on the brass button inside the steering column. But not sure what happened in the first polace that caused this the key to get stuck. he had power in the truck until he went out there and left the radio on. I am charging the batt. now. But i am hoping to get some info on what to do next to fix this for him so he doesn't get stuck somewhere.

once you charge the battery, try to get it out/or try it again(the key).[8D] I had a 97 just today that had the same issue with a weak battery. After charging, put it back in and whola...worked fine. Let us know. jp

We had the same problem with my 2001 today.
We had disconnected the battery, while changing the transmission. The key WILL NOT come out, without a battery.
In what universe does this make sense???

It is all part of the shift interlock system, I know it does not make sense, but that is the way that they wanted it to work, I guess!

I got it started and let it run for an hour to charge back kup. when i shut it down same thing it was stuck until I pushed on the brass acuator. I asked my sone if he had hit anything or ran over something that would have caused the issue.he said no. Will it be safe to drive and just use a small screw driver to push on the acuator until I can do better?

When I pulled my gauge cluster out to put in led bulbs I tried to pull my key out and had the shifter on the column not all the way in park of which I thought it was! Try putting it in park a few times and see if that releases the key!!
