What was said "someone's" reasoning for saying the compressor was fixing to go? What symptoms are you experiencing?

Fixing to go? Is it working now? If working, about the only thing I can imagine that would be an indication of an impending issue would be oil starting to leak from the compressor seal as evidenced by dirt sticking/building up there. In that case, replace the compressor. Recover the refrigerant, replace the compressor with a new or rebuilt, replace the expansion valve, pull a vacuum in the system to get all the air out, fill it back u with freon and enjoy the cool air.
