How do i find out why my airbag light is on???

Get the codes read & look them up.

Must be done with a scan tool capable of accessing body codes. The el cheapo $300 or $400 scan tools that the auto parts stores have won't do it.

1997 doesn't have a body controllers just a derm unit behind the right kick panel

Correct, and the DERM is interfaced to the data link connector. It sends serial data that is read with a scan tool. There are actually several "body computers" that all send serial data to the data link connector. They are considered "body codes", as opposed to "powertrain", that's why you need a scan tool capable of retrieving body codes. 1998 and newer, they use classII communications with one BCM, (Body Control Module).
