We checked the relay by using the one for the horn. Parts store told us it was the same one. Still no luck there.

Also there is something different in the wiring of the fuel pump/sender unit depending on where you buy it from. I didn't see mine before it was fitted so can't say what ! But now my fuel gauge reads OK, until I put the lights on, then it goes to empty ! But hey, at least its running (after a fashion) which it hadn't been for weeks !

We hot wired it with the battery charger ( 12 volts @ the pump) We did not try jumping it at the relay yet.

to the OP, where did you hot wire the pump at? Did you try jumpering it at the relay? If so, then the rest of the wiring from the relay to the pump should be fine.

This does remind me of the run-around I had with my fuel pump fault. The mechanic who eventually fixed it used a 60W load (a couple of tail lights in parallel) connected in place of the fuel pump to prove the relay, supply and grounds were all ok. After that he re-wired the replacement pump correctly (it wasn't originally and never worked) and we had fuel ! It does seem like certain types of fuel pump don't seem to last long on this model. I've been driving 20 years and never had a fuel pump go on any other vehicle I've owned (Ford,GM,Chrysler,Land Rover,BMW,Saab etc.)
