Default 1999 Blazer

I have been coming here the past few months when looking how to fix items on my Blazer. But this time I needed to create an account.

I'm looking to get more insight on other possible causes/things to consider replacing, etc.

I bought this Blazer back in February with 19,000 miles on it. It was a government vehicle. There were several items that needed to be replaced.

Here is what all was done up to 10/23

6 New Spark Plugs
6 New Spark Plug Wires
New Fuel Pump
New Fuel Filter
2 New Tires
New Front Rotors
New Front Brake Pad
New PVC Valve
New K&N Air Filter
2 New Shocks
New 4x4 Actuator Valve
New 4x4 Vacuum Lines
New Alternator
New Radiator
New Antifreeze
New Oil Change
New Axle Seal
New Front Differential Seal
New Battery
New Legal Window Tint
New Distributor Cap
New Rotor Button
New Front End Alignment
New Headlight Bulbs
New Taillight Bulbs
New LED License Plate Lights
New LED Dome Lights
New Thermostat
Flushed heater core, now I have heat.

Headlights were adjusted, they were both out of alignment.

Rear Drums and Brakes were inspected and are almost brand new.

4 wheel drive didn't work, turns out the vacuum lines dry rotted and there is a regulator or valve with what looked like a ball bearing on the side, well the bearing was stuck and you couldn't press it down. We got a new one and 4 wheel drive has worked ever since.

Now, after replacing the fuel filter and fuel pump, when we tried to start it, it didn't start. Someone mentioned that you need to turn the key 3 times and then it will start which primes the fuel pump. Now in the morning the Blazer has been starting right up, no problems at all. It's when I drive it for a while that when I turn it off and then try to start it again that it doesn't start right away. I have to prime it. I went to AutoZone and the GM tech there told me it was most likely the fuel pressure regulator, but I need to test the fuel pressure first. Before replacing all these parts the Blazer started up right away, every time.

With all that said, is there anything else that I need to look over?

My second issue is, when the gas is at 1/4 tank and I put it in reverse, it goes to empty and the fuel light appears, soon as I put it back in park/drive it goes back to normal. We thought it was the sending unit which is why we initially replaced the fuel pump. The same GM tech told me it sounds like a grounding issue but wasn't sure how to fix it without looking at it. Has anyone here run into this and knows the fix?

Thanks!

Well not so fast....

Looks like the problem is still there.

The regulator was leaking, so it did need to be replaced. The spider assembly looks fine.

So we are thinking its the fuel pump. When my buddy installed it, he had to change the wires around so it would correctly pump the gas. He thinks they sent me the wrong one so in order to start it, it needs to be primed a few times. I paid $46 for this fuel pump from Prime Choice, we are thinking it's not the correct psi or maybe not even the correct pump but I just double checked their site and I bought the correct one. I am going to call them to see what we can do. We aren't able to check the psi yet, I have to buy it first. But this all started happening AFTER the fuel pump was replaced. So that's the only thing it can be that we know of.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Blazers. When you replace a fuel pump you should always use a factory pump: either AC Delco or Delphi. Aftermarket pumps generally perform poorly in these trucks.

New pump with my discount is $238. But we have a Blazer that happens to be right next door that went into a ditch and bent the frame, so we are going to see if that pump is any good.

Which do you prefer, I found a Delphi for $188 and Delco for $238

Have to be careful with these parts; is either in a plain white box? If so, get the other.

It is also possible to just replace the fuel pump itself and not the entire assembly. Fuel pump kit is only about $50 but of course requires removing the pump from the assembly and so. Going this route does not replace the fuel level sensor either, but is alot cheaper.

The fuel gauge operation is the same as my '02.

id go with the delco and call it done. If you go the pump only route, you could. but its a hit or a miss breaking down the sending unit to install it. the few ive messed with something broke. buy it as a whole, and enjoy a good running blazer.

We got the old/new pump off and replaced it with one a guy had next door. We tested it, it pumps gas. Problem is, sometimes there is power to the pump, sometimes there isn't. It's sporadic. Any ideas? I still have the same issue as with the first pump we installed.
