2000 starter issue

Have had an issue since this summer, i have a 4x4 LS, that is not my daily driver. For sone reason I have what is a starter hiccup. It cranks but seems to bind half way through. It began and was only something that would occur occasionally. I thought it was the battery as it died earlier last winter. So i replaced the battery which was bad and now the issue is more obvious and more frequent. It does not happen all the time, usually every two or so starts, it pushes itself through and starts ( no grinding) and the next time
starts fine.

i replaced the starter four weeks ago, issue completely went away, but today its back. Same issue, same result. I'd be hard pressed to think the second one is bad in the same fashion, but would love to hear what others think.

I had the same issue, sometimes it would grind and sound terrible, after a few tries it would finally start

I replaced my starter and haven't had the issue since.

Since you replaced yours, and it went away, there was a problem with the starter. But, now that it has come back, I think there's something else wrong that is prematurely killing your starter.

Maybe remove the starter, and have a friend with a socket and breaker bar on the crank pulley rotate the engine around while you inspect the flywheel? Maybe you have a few messed up teeth?

Edit: I've never had a problem with needing to shim a starter, but I know sometimes it's required. Maybe that's the problem?

Just an update, I changed the starter out with a new ac delco oem starter, issue is still there but now i have a check engine light. The codes that are present are P0338 and P1361, both kind of point to a crank position sensor.

should I change that out ? Can i use one from a parts store or do i need an oem one ? Do i need to do a relearn, or will i be fine without ? And should i have the dealer do the relearn?
