Default 2001 Blazer ltd 4wd, 4dr. Runs rough then stops

2001 Blazer ltd 4wd, 4dr. After 250 mile trip my blz stop running as pulled of highway, it was a hot afternoon. It sounded like it was out gas, I had 3/4 tank. When I stopped I triied turning it over, It started, butt very rough then died. the temp gage was very hot. Towed it home. Next day started it again ran rough for a few moments then died. A mechanic friend of mine said the ignition didnot seem right. It would not run in the run position but would start running in the start position, very rough then stop. The same symptoms have happen over the past couple years, 2010, 2012, in very hot 100 degree weather. I thought I was running out of gas. I kept starting it until I got to a station. I would fill up, and I had more than 1/4 tank, Then would start and run Fine. I replaced the fuel pump in early 2014 . Any help would be greatly appreciated Thank You Tom
