The timing chain cover gasket is leaking oil and the place i took it to wanted $1500 in labor. I can't afford that, so what are the things i need to do to replace this. And, what do i need to do this replacement.

 

Is this a 2WD or 4WD?
If 4WD there is alot involved in getting the front cover off; either rhe engine has to be lifted or the front differential lowered in order to get the oil pan off. The oil pan must come off before the front cover can come off as the gasket goes across the interface.

So the $1500 price tag does have some rationale behind it.

I need to do this repair as well on my '02...common problem with the plastic front covers.

And also part of the repair requires the correct computer tool to tell the Blazer engine computer to do a "crank position sensor relearn"....since you have to move the sensor...its in the front cover.

X2 to Lanny, but doesn't the cover itself need to be replaced as well? It seems I read that somewhere,probably here...

 

Yep...the plastic timing cover will need to be replaced along with the gaskets (oil pan and timing cover, crankshaft sensor O ring).

Does X2 mean 2wd?

Just out of curiosity, why does the timing cover need to be replaced? I know it does, it's in the TSM and stamped right on cover itself. I'm actually ordering mine from GMpartsdirect tonight...but I've always wondered if it is good shape when it is removed, why does it need to be replaced?

 

Because if you don't, it leaks

It's late, can't remember for sure, something about the plastic getting distorted or brittle being exposed to heat, (from the block).
