You broke a rear rotor?? I guess its possible if one of the C-clips in the diff breaks, but I cannot imagine why that would happen unless it was a manufacturing fault. The rear axle bearings do not support the thrust loading of the rear end. Just the radial loading. This means they hold the back end up, but do not hold the axle shafts in. Inside the diff there are large C-clips that go on to the end of each shaft that hold the shafts into the spider gears of the diff. Effectively the thrust forces are transmitted through the spider gears to the carrier and from the carrier bearings to the diff case. If you have a broken C-clip in the diff you should be able to pull the axle all the way out of the rear end, not just move back and forth a little bit. Assuming the rear end didnt self destruct to cause this problem, the car would have still been drivable but a problem would be obvious as you seem to indicate.

I am pretty rough on my vehicle and when I replaced my rear end the first time and re-shimed it the second time I checked out these clips. They are pretty beefy and my driving had begun to extrude the steel around the axle shaft lands, so I put them in backwards to reverse the process. This took almost 200K miles driving like a mad man. They will break someday or I will put a diff rear end in and replace them at that time. So unless you take your truck to track days every other weekend, I doubt these would have broken through any normal wear and tear or even "normal" abuse. At a minimum it sounds like you need to take the rear diff pan off to further diagnose the problem.

Good luck,
-William

Ive been driving the blazer everyday
with some noise in the rear and took
off the caliper and but on new brake pads
and it was still noisy so i went and bought
a new caliper rotor and new pads and took off
the rotor and noticed it was cracked on the bottom
of it after taking off the rotor i noticed
where the axel goes into the axel housing
there was a lot of play and looks like a bearing
or seal used to be there just had the metal ring left

Please try to be a bit more descriptive. Was the rotor broken in 1 place or 2? Which way is there play in the axle? Up/down, left/right, in/out? What was the condition of the old pads? Did you have the rotor turned prior to the installation of the new pads? Has the vehicle been overloaded regularly during its life?

axle play left/right up/down
rotor was broke on the bottom
not broken in half new problem is
its all apart rear differential cover is off
fluid is out lock screw is out pinion shaft is
3/4 out and not enough clearance to get c clips out
well i need to take out passenger side axle
drivers side axle i can move c clip no problem
but the one i want out passenger side i cant get axle
in far enough to get c clip out to pull the axle

i think the rotor got chewded a little because
i had a bad rear axle bearing it was destroyed
just got it out today i live in vt snow on the ground
great time learned the hard way axle will not come out unless
the pinion shaft is completly removed being out 3/4 is not enough
