2005 Blazer - key won't release

My 2005 Blazer will not release the ignition key, with the key in the on position. This started out as an intermittent problem that quickly became an almost every time I turned the ignition off deal.
I have to disconnect the battery to avoid draining it. When I reconnect the battery and try to start the vehicle, it will not run unless I keep my foot on the accelerator- RPM's drop to 500, then 300, then engine quits. After going through this several times the RPM's will stabilize and I can drive away. This starting problem did not happen before the key problem, so I think they are related.
I took it to a mechanic who first thought the tumbler was the problem, but somehow ruled that out. He found a bad wire under the dash that he fixed/replaced and thought he had the problem solved.
No such luck. The next day, the key would again not realease.![Icon Evil](https://blazerforum.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_evil.gif)
Ideas? A friend says the Viper remote start/security system might be to blame. Is that possible?

There should be a little hole under the steering column on the right. Push a 1/4" bolt, screwdriver or whatever you have that'll fit in there & the key will release.
Search around in here & you'll find many posts on this issue & different things that cause it.

Thanks for your quick reply.
I tried the hole/screwdriver trick but no luck. Tried straight in, all angles, while trying to release the key and also with just hoping for a clicking sound or... No dice. I've probed up to 4-5". Is the release up even further?
A search did not show any cases where the key was actually stuck in the "on" position, drawing power from the battery. If there were some, no real solutions were offered as far as I could find.
I'd hate to take it back to the garage and have them start throwing parts at the problem with no real idea what the cause is...

I have a relative that had the same issue with his Silverado. I called the GM help line we found in the back of the owners manual. We tried the things listed here with no luck and believe it or not, 'ol boy on the line told me to hit it straight on with a hammer. One smack with a 2 1/2 pounder and the key released. No lie. A couple weeks later the same thing happened. He was able to figure out both times it happened, someone else had driven it and put the door key in first. It jammed the tumblers enough to lock the ignition key when it was inserted.

I just went thru the same problem with my 2005 Blazer
I pulled the Centre console and cleaned everything with alcohol (found five bucks in change)
Sprayed wd40 on all moving parts...wiggled them till they moved freely. Cleaned the contacts .took me about an hour. No parts required.
Engine runs great again! Hope this helps!
