Default 4wd broke?

so i was out wheeling in my blazer going through a mud pit my friends blazer just went through. so i get stuck. i let my friend drive and i look at the wheels while he puts it in gear. the fronts are not moving at all. the differential not being locked is not the issue here. both front wheels were on solid dry ground. they were just not recieving any torque. anyways so i get out of that whole and im driving down the trail when i start hearing a grinding pop from the front of my car while in 4 hi. i put it in 2 hi and im able to drive home, and here i sit now. any ideas anyone? what should i do next?

That dosn't really explain the 'grinding pop' though.

Common cause, the front axle engage is done with a vacuum motor, might be the issue, as giovanni said, search it and there is probably a thread with the information you need, try looking for front axle issues
