Default 4wd engage wheels lockup

ok,
i tried digging and came up empty.

so i have a buddy with a 2000 zr2 pickup, here is the short version

he puts it in 4hi or 4lo and he says diff engages but cant move.
he claims front wheels lockup and truck will not move at all,
and its not the typical "binding from a tight turn". wheels can be straight or turned.
2hi seems like everything is fine.

i have him looking into the actuator and cable, both he says are moving.
i am thinking its internal but not sure.

thanks for the help.

no, he has not modded the truck in anyway.
he says it used to work fine, he went to use it when winter started
to kick in and it just no longer functions.
i have not looked at it personally (no time).
it sounds to me like it is binding up in the dif. like something is not engaging all the way.
i dont know enough about dif. and axles to say.

So does it rev or just bind up and not move?

Can you repeat the condition if you lock in the front axle manually and leave the transfer case in 2HI? If so, then the problem has been narrowed down to the front axle. If not, then you have narrowed it down to inside the transfer case.

engine will rev but front wheels will not turn.
he drives all day long in 2hi.

thats a good idea...

thank you for pointing me in a direction, becasue i have no idea how to narrow it down.

i know from talking to him that the 4 button on his dash will switch between 2hi 4 hi and 4lo. and that the actuator and cable both move. that is where i left off.

i will see what we can find and report back.
thank you
