Now that winter is here I needed 4 wheel drive last night and I had issues. It has auto 4 wheel drive which I usually use but when I hit the button last night on the dash it switched fine but was making an awful racket.

I didn't want to thread hi-jack but I see similar issues with the 4x4 help asap thread,I'm clicking and grinding when I engage but after I disengage It goes away, but I did hear something screeching in 2wd around 35 km/hr. Noise is always there in 4wd, worse when turning. Could it be a c.v axle? Or what else should I look at, hopefully will have access to a garage this weekend or I will be doing it in the snow. thanks.

 

I used my fathers in laws garage today and yanked out the front driveshaft from the t-case to the front diff, it was shot.

That fixed my issues after installing new one. no more noise in auto 4wd, 4 hi etc. Problem now is I cannot engage 4lo.

When I first tried to engage it heard the motor try to engage but clanked when it tried and clanked when it went back to 2hi. I tried this a few times with the same results.

Now when I try to engage , 4lo blinks for a few seconds than reverts back to 2wd without clanking, no noise now. Auto/4 and 4 hi and 2 hi all switch flawlessly but no 4lo. No service lights blinking or anything just 4lo blinks and won't engage.

Any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated as I do need to fix my brakes also and hopefully solve this issue before having to resort to a mechanic.

From what I gather you have to be in N and let it roll a bit to go to 4 LO. If it tried and failed a few times, it may have a code in the TCCM that needs to be cleared. try clearing the code and try again.
