Special stuff and GM probably doesn't want to give up the secret to it.
NV233 & NV236 both look similar to the image. It shows the rear of the transfer case.
For the rear differential, 3 quarts will be close, little bit left over.

For the encoder motor to perform a mode shift, (at any speed) both drive shafts must be rotating at the same RPM. If all 4 tires are not the same circumference, the drive shafts will not rotate at the same RPM. When the vehicle is stopped, both shafts are rotating at the same RPM, zero
