I know we have covered this in the past but I couldn't find the thread.
Simple question really, Are the new washers just a lock washer or is it something the should be purchased from the dealer.
And the issue is noise from the hood pivot arms. It sounds like it comes from the dash...

The washers themselves are not lock washers, they are belleville washers that put somewhat constant pressure on the hinge connection to keep it from rattling without binding up the hinge.

So, I called my local chevy dealer today...no longer available. Is there anywhere to get the dimensions of the washer? McMaster-carr.com has an assortment of belleville spring washers for like 3-5 bucks for a package of 12. Beats the hell out of 3.49 plus 8-12 dollars shipping.
The bolt actually looked to me to be maybe an 8mm thread. Anyone got one laying around?

I don't recall anyone posting measurements in the past. If I still had an s-series, I'd do it. Your best bet is to pull the bolt and measure it.

You want the washer to fit up on the larger shouldered section on the bolt. The OD should match the washer face of the bolt head or the nut itself (whichever is larger). Almost as important is selecting the appropriate deflection load. Too light on the load and the hinge will still rattle. Too heavy and you could bind up the hinge and end up bending the hood.

If I remember correctly, the washers were quite thin, definitely below 0.06" in thickness and I'd guess somewhere in the 0.032"-0.039" thickness. Load will depend on material thickness as well as the h/t (amount of angle or cone to the washer).

 

Dealer was mistaken -- I just got them like 2 weeks ago at $4 a pop from a local Chevy dealer. Yes, it expensive for what amounts to two custom washers but well worth it to quiet that infernal racket.

GM Part # is 12383460. They are available on eBay and from GM dealers, PM me if you still have trouble finding them.

 

I stopped by our True Value store yesterday and picked up (2) 12mm wavey spring washers. They fit right onto the shoulder and corrected the problem....so far.
I'm out $1.06 for two pieces.

It's only a few bucks worth of parts though, so if you're having the same issue it's worth a try.
