98 blazer...what does the door pin do?

I have a 98 blazer, and when I got in and drove off this morning, the interior lights did'nt go off. So thinking that the problem might be with the driver's door pin switch, I pulled it out. Well, this cured the problem, but now there is no pin switch hooked up at all, and everything is working properly. When I open the door, the light comes on, when I close the door, it goes off after a few minutes.
This leads me to wonder what exactly the pin switch does on this vehilce. As it seems that there must be a scond switch on the latch mechanism or somewhere else? Why is it working without a switch in it at all?
I haven't been tried putting the switch back in again yet, because the plug fell down inside, and it is too cold to try to fish it out right now. Do I even need the switch?
thanks, jeff

There is a switch on the outside door handle, so when you lift the handle the interior lights will come on. This is why it seems it is working without the switch.

One thing I know that pin does is turn off the door- ajar buzzer and light. I had the plastic plug that it pushes against on the door out when i had it apart to fix my window and had to listen to it for three days.
