Default ABS System Recall

My '97 almost got me in an accident last night because the ABS system kicked in when someone pulled out in front of me, and the ABS wouldn't let the vehicle come to a complete stop. I had to take evasive maneuvers. I am aware of the recall, but wasn't sure if mine had been done or not until last night.

So, will GM still do the recall service on a vehicle this old, or is there something I can do myself to fix the problem? It snows here, so now I am really worried about my wife being able to stop with the kids in the car and a bus in front of her.

I also have the squishy brake pedal problem and it annoys the tar out of me. I have the medium-quality metallic pads, but my brakes are still squishy.

Yes the squishy brakes indicate your system needs to be bled, you have air in the brake lines.

Depends on the recall, dad still gets crap about the steering on a truck he hasn't owned in 6 years (89 model toyota). New owner used it as a parts truck so last registered owner was dad.

This might be the cause, but it's not a recall, just a service bulletin: http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/GM...s_bulletin.pdf

I need to bleed the system then, I guess. I thought that might be the case, but I wasn't sure if ABS systems had auto-bleeders. I don't know how ABS systems are put together, so don't call me crazy if I am wrong.

I can't find the recall anymore, so it must not have existed. I could have sworn the ABS system had a recall that had to do with the truck not being able to stop because of some problem with the ABS system.

Thanks for the help... when I get a second person and some time, I'll do both of these things.

As long as the master cylinder does not run dry, the automated bleed is not necessary. Bleed them as you would bleed a standard locking brake hydraulic system.
