Default Any Ideas on 4 wheel drive not disengaging?

Hi everyone, I'm not a Newbie but its been so long I forgot which email I used on my wirespider01 account

Anyhow, I have a 1998 Blazer. Ive searched in the posts and the closest I can find to my problem is where some peoples Blazers where doing this but hey couldn't get theirs to disengage even when they shut their Blazer off.

Mine will go right back into 2WD if I shut it off then turn the key to the run position and hit the 2WD button. The actuator in the kick panel is making the clicking sound like its suppose to and the wires to that plug seem to be ok. However, it wont shift back into 2wd easily unless I just turn it off then back onto the run position..

I read one where people just constantly play with the buttons for 15 minutes until it switches back. Well, ive tried that and it actally will confuss the computer or something and ill loose all 4wd lights and no clicking noise from kick panel. What i do then is take the hot cable off the battery and reset it and the 4wd works good again. I get a few times after that where i can put it into park and it will go back into 2wd but it doesn't last long. I just end up having to reset "something" with the ignition switch.

Anybody know off whats acting up being i can turn the Blazer off the turn it to run and then it will go right into 2wd?

Thanks everyone...

Do you have the 3-button 4x4 system or the 4-button? I've seen similar issues on the 4 button system where it was the switch module that was causing the problem. Swapped it out and the 4x4 worked perfect. It could also be corrosion on the connector and wires at the TCCM in the passenger kick pannel too. It can get moisture in there sometimes.

Default 3 button

Thanks El_Beautor for the ideas.

I have the three button one. 2wd, 4hi and 4lo. I've looked at the wires and plug under the passenger side kick panel and they look good.

My biggest problem is after the vehicle is run in 4wd hi for a little while it won't disengage. The 2wd light will flash a few times but it just won't kick out, which leaves me remaining in 4wd hi.

I can get out of 4 wheel drive by turning the Blazer off, then turning the ignition to run and hitting the 2wd button.

Then I just start it and go and its defiantly not just the light on, its disengaged.

My suggestion is to remove the 4x4 switch module from the dash and then CAREFULLY disassemble it to access the circuit board. Reflow all the solder joints, especially the ones where the connector is and then re-assemble.

Sounds like the switch module is just not making a 100% reliable connection.

Easy thing to do, just use a normal soldering iron and not one of those soldering guns that burns/melts everything!

Thanks for the ideas and time Lanny, I'm going to try this. I do have a 25 watt iron for circuit boards.

Been busy with my K2500 plow truck. I didn't remember to run it much over the past 7 months and when we got 10" of snow here in Pa last week I was reminded the hard way that I really need to keep the truck lubed. Lost some break lines too. Then when I got that all fixed, the pump motor for my Myers e47 went bad.

Still though, Chevy rules. It's a tough 3/4 ton with a 350.
