Anybody having trouble with AC Delco fuel pumps?
Having problems with engine stall and cut out. I have a failing computer as it failed the on board diagnostic test.
I diagnosed a bad fuel pump which is the third one in 4 years. Loses pressure immediately after turning ignition off. Goes from 57psi to 30 in less than a minute.
I read on another thread that if you see black particles in the fuel filter, you have a failing a fuel pump.
Either way it doesn't matter. I have to replace the fuel pump. Again. Anybody have success with another brand?

I did an autopsy on the fuel pump.
Wanted to find the point of failure and I believe I did. It was the internal ball check valve which unfortunately has a very weak spring. If it doesn't put enough pressure on the ball bearing, fuel will leak back through the check valve.
As it is, even the particles from the brushes will prevent the ball from seating properly.
This is unfortunate due to the fact this is a serious and common cause of premature failure of a fuel pump. I ordered external inline fuel ball check valves as an extra bit of security against premature failure of fuel pumps. Going through 3 fuel pumps is beyond absurd.
Unfortunately, since this was a rather destructive autopsy, I fear that reconstruction would be impossible unless I had aluminum tubing of proper diameter and some crimping dies to hold it all together. Of course, I would replace the weak spring with something a little stronger to the tune of 3-4 pounds of pressure to insure a good seat of the ball bearing against the rubber seat.

Everyone says ac Delco/Delphi pumps are the best available- however I bought a new pump right out of the box it leaks down just like yours does... unfortunately I've had it sitting in the truck without testing it for a couple of months and don't think I will be able to exchange it now.

I ordered this:
I am not replacing another fuel pump unless the motor itself fails. At least with an external ball check valve, the check valve easier to service or replace.
I ordered two. I plan to dissect one and see if I can fabricate one on my lathe.

Yes. Fuel pumps that don't hold pressure cause problems with driveability. An inline check valve provides an extra layer of security.
