I looked at the cable today, didn't notice anything catching or sticking. Also looked at the butterfly valve, didn't see any big traces of gunk or anything. So I sprayed some WD-40 throughout the assembly. I drove it afterwards for almost 60 miles and didn't have any problems. Then again, it has only happened twice in three months or so, so one day doesn't mean anything. I'll probably replace the cable as soon as I can order it. We'll see.

Two things come to mind, I used to work on Samurai's a lot, and was not uncommon for the steel throttle cable to start to fray inside the outer sheath, and would sometimes hang up and eventually break, not to mention getting really stiff.
Pull the throttle body off and disassemble it, including the butterfly. You will be surprised how much carbon builds up under the plate you can't see and could lead to sticking. Also clean all the carbon out of the idle air solenoid and the idle air bleed hole in the throttle plate while you are at it.
Once clean, lubricate the linkage.
Bet it is one or the other.
Be happy don't have fly by wire, biggest complaint about the new Hemi engines I work on, plays havoc with tuning.

Thanks for the tip. I have the new throttle cable ordered, and when I replace that, I'll check out the throttle body at the same time.

Are you saying that the TPS was the problem? I was told on another forum that the TPS might have something to do with it. I asked on here what everyone thought about that theory, but I'm pretty sure no one commented on it. As it is, I'm replacing the throttle cable, once it gets to my house, that is. I'll have to research the TPS more. Thanks.

this probably isnt it but ill tell you anyway.
i had a stalling issue which turned out to be a defective/broken idle air motor. when i installed the new one the car accelerated up to 50km/hr by itself. i was able to stop and go, it felt more like the throttle cable was stuck but after flooring it i guess the ide motor calibrated itself and went back to normal.
so there is a small chance your idle air motor is letting in air or getting jammed somehow.

I'm absolutely open to new ideas. Thanks for replying. When I get the new cable, which will be here Tuesday (along with a part which will hopefully fix the visor problem I posted about in another thread), I will also check out the other parts that you guys have talked about here.
