Default Battery question

I am having troubles getting my car to start. It happened about two weeks ago it would not start but it seemed like it was because my battery was dead. It was about 6 years since I replaced the battery so I went out and bought a new that put out a little more power and what not. i drove it for that week and all was fine. It sat for the last week in the parking lot at my school and I just want to check to make sure that something is not drawing of this battery and possibly killing it. So my question is what should the volt meter on the dash read when the engine is off and key is on in the ignition?

to test for a battery draw, , remove the negative terminal from the battery, take a test light and take one end to a good know ground and one end to the battery terminal(not the one you removed). if the test light, lights up you have a draw somewhere. try that,
