can incomplete drive cycle cause not ready status
#1
i have a 1998 chevrolet blazer with 192,000 miles. tune ups oil changes regular and good upkeep. went to get vehicle inspected and it failed. tech showed the not ready status on egr, heated o2, and catalyst. i work 2 miles from the shop and was told that vehicle may not have had time to perform ob2 self test. no check engine light has come on (mil bulb) working. no battery change or jumpstart since 2008. never heard of drive cycle, is this someting for real ??? was told i might drive for twenty-thirty miles and come back for retest and status might change. any thoughts help would be greatly appreciated. North Carolina Inspection
thanks

Yes, it's for real! In the real world, I've seen vehicles go for months and not complete every monitor. Here is a link to the GM drive cycle. It must be followed EXACTLY or the monitors will not run and complete their tests. You don't have to do every step in the cycle, just the ones that aren't complete. Read through it and do the ones that have not completed. With some practice, you can do the entire drive cycle in about 15 minutes.

Is it getting up to the proper temperature as this will prohibit the monitors from running. Jerry-just a random thought...

drove from work to inspection station. less than 2 miles. outside air temp 34 degrees. hopefully engine did not gethot enough to go to ready status. just a thought would bad parts, egr o2 sensors create not ready status regardless of how long driven or following drive cycle guidelines. no codes read from autozone scan tool

Some monitors require a cold start, others require the engine to be at operating temperature. If a part has a hard fault, it will set a DTC immediately. Go through the drive cycle, if it's followed correctly, all monitors will run and complete their tests.

don't spend any more money at this point, just drive it. Maybe since the last battery disconnect/jump, you haven't driven an hour or so at any point? Seems strange but I've seen some strange ones. Follow the drive chart-you should be ok. Is he temp getting up to around 195? Jerry
