Cataytic Converter Replacement question ???

We own a 97 Blazer 4dr 4x4. I have a code that indicates either an O2 sensor behind converter or the converter itself is bad.
First I will check the O2 sensor. But if it is the Cat Converter, what are you guys buying & where for replacements? I went on line to Auto Zone & the direct fit converters are around $250. There has to be a cheaper 49 state way to go. I don't want to do away with it completely.
Thanks in advance.

I guess I'll see what the muffler shop says price wise. I can't get to it until next week anyway. The wife is driving it 120 miles a day to work. One plus it is seems to be getting a little better mileage since the check engine light appeared.
Thanks everyone. I'll update when I get it figured out & fix it.
